    Health Informatics Faculty

    The Department of Health Services Administration in the School of Health Professions and the Informatics Institute in the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a jointly appointed full time, open rank, tenure-track faculty position. The new faculty member should demonstrate experience in the application of Health Informatics, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence, across various healthcare disciplines.

    Essential job responsibilities include expertise and experience in health informatics as applied to the various elements of data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, clinical and administrative health information systems, and ability to collaborate with other related fields that intersect with health informatics. The ideal candidate will have earned a terminal degree in a relevant discipline that qualifies for mentoring students and teaching in our health and biomedical informatics programs (joint appointment). Candidates at the rank of Associate professor or above will demonstrate a strong portfolio of research and scholarship. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    The Health Informatics (HI) graduate programs at UAB includes one of the oldest programs in the country with a long-standing reputation of producing work force ready graduates, many of whom go into leadership positions. The Biomedical Informatics and Data Science program is brand new. The HI programs have strong faculty, a rigorous curriculum, and a supportive advisory board. The department is supportive, providing mentoring in scholarly pursuits and support for dissemination of scholarly products. The HI programs are in the process of increasing their offerings by adding masters and doctoral level programs focused on artificial intelligence (AI).

    About the Health Services Administration: The Department of Health Services Administration offers two doctoral programs, and masters programs in Health Informatics (CAHIIM accredited), Healthcare Quality and Safety (CAHME accredited), Health Administration (CAHME-accredited, ranked #1 in the nation by US News and World Report), and Healthcare Simulation (one of a few in the nation). We also have a large, AUPHA-certified undergraduate program in Healthcare Management and conduct tailored continuing education programs with the field of practice. Department faculty engage in multidisciplinary research programs with faculty from across the academic campus, academic medical center (UAB Health System) and UAB Heersink School of Medicine Informatics Institute.

    About the Informatics Institute: The Informatics Institute in the University of Alabama Heersink School of Medicine is an academic unit with faculty and trainees from multiple departments within the School of Medicine, as well as several other schools at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Faculty and staff carry out a wide range of informatics research and service, ranging from bioinformatics methods and analysis, through clinical research informatics, to clinical informatics. The Institute is currently going through dramatic growth and transformation, expanding its focus to encompass artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data and implementation sciences.
