    Position Overview

     

    Cone Health, a $2.8 billion private, nonprofit, multi-hospital, integrated health system that is financially strong, innovative, and growing announces a national search for a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) during the most dynamic time in the history of the organization.  The CMIO will serve as a top physician leader and liaison between the medical staff and administration to support the advancement of information technology into hospital and ambulatory practice settings that promote the highest possible quality, safety and evidence-based patient care.  The CMIO will also play a critical role in helping advance Cone Health’s newly developing Value-Based Care Institute and positioning the health system as a national leader in value-based care delivery and innovation as it becomes a pinnacle strategic member of Risant Health.

     

    This high profile CMIO will report directly to the Cone Health CIO and work in close collaboration with the EVP, Value Based Care and other key leaders across the system. The future Cone Health CMIO will demonstrate significant expertise in Epic, superb communication and interpersonal skills, and proven leadership and change management skills gained in a complex health system. The CMIO will establish instant credibility and forge trusted relationships with physicians regarding the adoption, standardization, and optimization of Epic and other health information and data analytic systems to support the delivery of exceptional patient care and advance clinical quality throughout Cone Health.  The CMIO will partner with clinicians, IT leadership, administrative leaders, and other key stakeholders to fully evaluate and gain an accurate understanding of the current state and impact of health information technology on Cone Health’s physician community. The CMIO will provide continuous feedback to leadership on physician IT issues and needs and proactively involve physicians, nurses, and other clinical and ancillary personnel in efforts to address provider EHR dissatisfaction through improved workflows and overall functionality and usability.  The CMIO will remain current on medical informatics trends and approaches to effectively advise senior leadership on health informatics policy and assist in the development of the health system’s IT strategic plan including future developing IT and Artificial Intelligence applications.

     

    The ideal CMIO candidate will be a seasoned physician experienced in EPIC, having led organizations through change/transformation, who is highly relational and understands the current challenges of practicing medicine.  He/She will have an informatics background, be technically savvy, understand healthcare data and interoperability with EPIC, understand clinical best practices, workflows, and physician efficiency.  The CMIO must be emotionally intelligent, proactive, analytical, strategic-minded, and an innovative leader who can successfully transform strategic vision into execution to achieve desired results through a well-informed and engaged medical staff.

    Education, Certification, Licensure & Experience Requirements:

     

    Qualified candidates must have a M.D., D.O. or equivalent medical degree.

     

    It is highly preferred that candidates hold current board certification from a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association.  It is also preferred that candidates hold current board certification in Clinical Informatics.

     

    Five or more years of experience leading medical informatics and five or more years of experience managing or directing clinical information teams in a complex health system is required.

    The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is Cone Health’s flagship.  This 628-bed teaching hospital and referral center is a designated Level II Trauma Center offering state-of-the-art care in neurosciences, stroke, heart and vascular, orthopedics, and oncology.  The campus also features Cone Health Women’s & Children’s Center that includes a 45-room, Level III NICU and a dedicated Children’s Emergency Center.

    • In 2013, the system implemented Epic to provide secure and ready access to patient medical history from anywhere within the network.

     

    • In January 2016, Cone Health began offering Medicare Advantage coverage through HealthTeam Advantage (HTA), a 5-star Medicare Advantage program that consistently scores among the top organizations in the nation for quality and lower costs.

     

    • In February 2024, the health system announced plans to establish its own Center for Value-Based Care aimed at scaling lessons learned from success in distinct value-based care agreements and its Medicare Advantage program.

     

    • In July 2024, Cone Health and Risant Health jointly announced that they signed a definitive agreement under which Cone Health will become part of Risant Health, pending regulatory approvals.  Risant Health is a nonprofit, charitable organization created by Kaiser Foundation Hospitals to bring together like-minded organizations, increase access to value-based care and coverage, and raise the bar for approaches that bring the best health outcomes.  Cone Health is the second health system (Geisinger Health was the first) to become part of Risant Health.  It will operate independently as a regional and community-based health system and will maintain its own brand, name, mission, and board.  Through Risant Health, Cone Health will gain even greater expertise in value-based care and make care more accessible and affordable for more people across the Greensboro Triad area.
